Fun Day Monday: Trees provide wildlife habitat in winter

KIRTLAND – Bring the family and friends to learn how trees provide wildlife habitat in winter during Fun Day Monday at Penitentiary Glen Reservation. The event is free for all ages. Stop by the Nature Center between 10 am and 3 pm on Monday, January 16 for free indoor and outdoor activities.

Explore the park on snowshoes. Rentals are available for a small fee on a first-come, first-served basis, weather permitting. Stop in the Nature Center for details..

There are many free activities happening every day at Penitentiary Glen Reservation. Discover the sights and sounds of wildlife at the interactive Nature Calls exhibit. Watch and listen to birds and other wildlife outside through the Window on Wildlife. Visit the Kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center to see the Lake Metroparks wildlife ambassadors, including hawks, owls and eagles. Enjoy a hike on more than 8.5 miles of scenic trails (open year-round).

The Nature Center and Kevin P. Clinton Wildlife Center are open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. The Nature Store, open daily until 4:30 pm, is a great resource for nature-related toys, field guides for adults and children, nature-inspired t-shirts, binoculars by VORTEX, birdfeeders and wildlife houses. Snacks and beverages are also available for purchase.

Join us for more Fun Day Monday activities on February 20 (Presidents’ Day) where we’ll discover how many animals are active in winter as told by the signs they leave behind. Another Fun Day Monday is planned for April 17 during spring break.

The park features 424 acres of forest, fields, wetlands, and 8.5 miles of hiking trails and has been designated by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife as a “Watchable Wildlife” site.
