Ohio Food Trips

WHERE ARE THE BEST PIES IN OHIO?

Growing up in the country you learn to appreciate pie. I could always tell what season it was by the fruit pies being made by my grandma. Pie making was an art form at my grandma’s. She first would cut the chilled lard into the dry mixture with her pastry cutter. She then rolled the dough out on her pie board with such precision and care. Her crusts where always flaky and her pies always filled as high as the pan allowed. My grandmother made great pies. How I miss those pies.

Over the past few years, I have hit the back roads in search of the best pies in Ohio. Always hoping that just maybe I would find a pie that reminds me of my grandmother. I still have not found my grandmother’s pie, but I have found a few that tasted very close.

PIES

Of course you will always find delicious Amish baked pies, as well as other delicious bakery items in Ohio’s Amish Country.  I would suggest you order ahead and bring a cooler if you are planning on purchasing any of their cream pies or spending any time shopping the area.

Amish Door Village Restaurant
Amish Door Strawberry Pie

The Amish Door offers a nice selection of pies in their bakery. My favorite pie is the Large Brown Bag Apple Pie. It literally is stuffed with apples and then baked in a brown bag. My other favorites are strawberry and peach.   You can also enjoy a slice of one of their pies at their restaurant.

If you like saving money, take a trip to the Gardner Pie Outlet. Everyday on their Facebook page. they post what pies will be available that day. Better get there early, especially leading up to the holidays.  The pies are cheaper because they either made more than ordered, or they have slight imperfections.  Sometimes they even have Tomato, Potato Pea, and Broccoli Cheese pies.

They may be best known for their blueberry donuts, but their pies are delicious too! You can’t always find a good custard pie, and I have been lucky to snag one each time I have visited.  (Along with a dozen of those famous donuts.)

FRY PIES

My grandmother never made a FRY PIE, but I have to say I am somewhat fond of them. What is a fry pie?  They are pie dough rolled into a circle about 6-8 inches and then filling is placed on one side and the dough is then folded in half over the filling.  Then they are sealed shut with a fork or hands,  deep fried and topped with a sugar glaze.

Want to try one?  Here are a few places you can grab those delicious bundles of goodness.
