OHIO MAPLE SYRUP and PANCAKE EVENTS

Each year in February the Ohio maple industry begins the process of tapping area maple trees for their sap. Tapping a tree consists of drilling a small hole in the trunk of a sugar maple and inserting a spout. Then attaching a bucket or plastic tubing to the spout where the sap is collected.

The weather plays a big part in the type of maple harvest there will be. Cold freezing nights and warm sunny days help the sap in the trees to thaw. As sap pressure builds up in the tree the sap finds its way out. By tapping the tree, the sap has an outlet. The sap is then boiled to remove the excess water. It takes approximately 40 to 50 gallons of sap to produce one gallon of syrup. Depending on the weather, the maple sugaring season lasts from mid-February through the first part of April.

This March why not experience Ohio’s maple season. Spend a day watching the smoke rise from the sugar houses, sample various products made from maple sugar, and eat pancakes smothered in 100% PURE OHIO MAPLE golden goodness.

Below is just a sampling of some of the maple syrup events happening around Ohio.

Burton, Ohio is Geauga County’s oldest and first official settlement.  Located on the square is the Burton Log Cabin Sugar Camp.  Here they make and sell some of the best pure Ohio maple syrup.

“In 1931, during the throes of the Great Depression a group of dedicated members of the Burton Chamber of Commerce had an idea to combat the difficult economic times.  The idea was to construct a log cabin in the park in Burton for the purposes of making and selling maple syrup.”  – excerpt from Burton Chamber of Commerce.

Our visit this year to Sugarbush Creek Farm included a wagon ride to the sugar house, a demonstration on how the Indians and pioneers made maple syrup, and a guided tour showing how the farm uses modern technology to collect the sap and produce their maple products.

#MyOhioFun road trip notes:
1. You are going to want to make sure to dress for the weather and wear boots.
2. The farm has built platforms for easy entry and exit off the wagon. Blankets are also provided. The ride is under 5 minutes to the sugar house.
3. Make sure to check out the wall in the sugar house with all the sample bottles. Very interesting to see the color changes in the sap throughout the maple season. Who knew bacteria played such a roll.
4. You can sample the syrup and warm up in the tasting lodge attached to the sugar house. There you will also see examples of what tapping does to trees and how they heal themselves.
4. The maple farm offers various maple products for sale. One of their unique items is their Maple Butter – cost $7. Syrup prices varied by size.
