HUESTON WOODS PIONEER FARM APPLE BUTTER FESTIVAL

“The Hueston Woods Apple Butter Festival provides a vignette of 19th century farm life and features the creation of apple butter in the pioneer fashion throughout the event from 12:00 – 3:00. A great family activity conveniently located for all Butler & Preble County residents. In addition to apple butter sales, a wide variety of apples, cider, pumpkins and gourds can be purchased on the grounds along with a huge variety of crafters and vendors. Tours are conducted through the Doty homestead and the barn, both of mid 1800’s vintage and exhibiting a broad display of museum artifacts. Each year demonstrations of pioneer crafts are featured along with a theme program.”

A highlight of the festival is the traditional method of making apple butter. Visitors can observe or even participate in the process, which often involves cooking apples in large copper kettles over an open flame. The sweet aroma of simmering apples fills the air as skilled artisans stir the bubbling mixture to perfection.

The Historical Society makes apple butter the old-fashioned way in five, 50-gallon copper kettles, cooked over open wood-burning fires. Canning and selling of the apple butter is done at the festival in the afternoon as it becomes ready. Annual attendance is estimated at 8-10,000 for the two days. Admission to the festival grounds is free. Free parking is available.
