The first battle of Petersburg, Virginia will be presented at Hale Farm and Village
For Immediate Release, Bath, Ohio — Visit Hale Farm & Village on August 10 and 11 for Ohio’s largest annual Civil War Reenactment. Experience the sights, sounds, smells and emotion of the battle.
On Saturday, August 10 at 2:30pm and Sunday August 11 at 2:00pm, visitors can experience a presentation of the first battle of Petersburg, Virginia (also know as the battle of old men and young boys). This was an unsuccessful Union assault on the city of Petersburg, on June 15, 1864. To recreate this battle Hale Farm & Village will be constructing earthworks in the north pasture where the battle takes place. During the Civil War, Petersburg was protected by fortifications known as the Dimmock Line, a line of earthworks 10 miles long, east of the city, including 55 artillery batteries, and anchored on the Appomattox River.
In early June 1864, Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and Gen. Robert E. Lee were engaged in the Overland Campaign, facing each other in their trenches after the bloody Battle of Cold Harbor. Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler of the Union Army realized that Richmond, Va. was supplied by railroads that converged in the city of Petersburg, to the south, and that taking Petersburg would cripple Lee’s supply lines. The assault consisted of Union infantry and cavalrymen who outnumbered the Confederate soldiers. However, after a poor leadership choice by Butler, confusion ensued and the Confederate soldiers were able to repulse the Union assault. Union forces eventually withdrew.
Other highlights of the weekend will include a visit from President Lincoln, Camp Chase Fifes and Drums Corps and shopping on Sutlers’ Row with vendors of Civil War era merchandise. Cavalry mounted drills, foot soldier drills, and artillery demonstrations will also take place throughout the weekend.
“The Civil War Reenactment provides visitors a chance to experience the history of our country first hand,” according to Jason Klein, Director of Hale Farm & Village.

Admission is $10 for adults or a two-day ticket is $15.00 and for children (12 and under) $5, or a two-day ticket is $7.50. Online ticket sales will be offered until August 9. After that date, tickets will need to be purchased at the door. Each day offers activities for the whole family and the opportunity to experience life during the American Civil War. Hale Farm & Village is open 10am-5pm both Saturday and Sunday.
