Celebrating the Donut
JUNE 7, 2024
The first Friday of each June, America celebrates National Donut Day. As a way of celebrating the Salvation Army’s World War I “doughnut girls”, the organization created the day to raise awareness of their organization and to celebrate these ladies.

So in honor of the “doughnut girls” below you will find a few of our favorite Ohio donut stops, as well as information about a special donut trail.

MADSEN DONUTS
Since 1938 locals and vacationers have been flocking to Madsen Donuts at Geneva-on-the-Lake. Their donut sections include plain cake, cinnamon sugar, glazed cake, powered sugar, chocolate round, glazed, cinnamon sticks, and sprinkle. So the next time you are in Ashtabula County make sure you stop and enjoy one of their deliciously fresh donuts.

MAGGIE’S DONUTS
Oh my, the “Maple Bacon” donuts are amazing! Could it be because they are located in the heart of Ohio’s maple syrup country?

WHITE HOUSE FRUIT FARM
Located in Canfield, Ohio is White House Fruit Farm. Besides being known for their 20 varieties of homegrown apples, the farm also is home to an amazing bakery that produces their famous “blueberry donuts”. Every day racks and racks of these delicious donuts are created to fill the need of customers. If blueberry is not your favorite flavor, these delicious donuts are available in other flavors.

LERCH’S DONUTS
Since 1934, and every year since, these fried soft cake donuts are a staple at the Wayne County Fair. The original Wooster donut shop opened in 1933 by John Lerch, Sr.. The shop is no longer around, but every year in the summer the mobile concession trailers head out to set-up shot around Wayne County and neighboring counties.
The donuts are available plain, sugared (a blend of powdered sugar and granulated), and cinnamon. Additional seasonal flavors are offered throughout the season.

BREWNUTS
What happens when you mix craft beer in the donut batter? A Brewnut! These delicious donuts are not only large, they taste absolutely delicious. Check their website for current and seasonal donut selections.

KENNEDY’S BAKERY
Little puffs of goodness is what I call their glazed donut centers. Really? Did they have to make them so darn good? Since 1925, this local bakery has been creating baked goods from scratch. Donuts, breads, cakes, pies, pastries, cupcakes, and more. From the moment you enter this bakery, your mouth starts to water. Kennedy’s Bakery has a huge local and regional following, as well as quite a social fan base. The word is getting out.

THE BUTLER COUNTY DONUT TRAIL
If you really love donuts, head to Butler County in southwest Ohio (between Dayton and Cincinnati) for a day or two donut tasting adventure as you sample your way through 13 mom-and-pop donut stops.
