I-76 Road TripsOhio Road Trips

LET’S TAKE A TRIP ON I-76 TO BARBERTON, OHIO.

It’s funny how we can drive in and out of communities and never take a minute to ask how they came to be. For years, I have made my way to Barberton to enjoy their famous chicken and to pick up my favorite smoked Hungarian sausage from Al’s. I have driven past Lake Anna and the historic farm structures hundreds of times over the years as I have made my way to my destinations. Never did I really stop to ask myself why is Barberton called the “Magic City.”

Over the last year, I have noticed a downtown revival happening in Barberton. What once was a community that was hit hard by closing factories and other challenges has begun bringing back its Main Street area and adding new destinations. If you have not ventured to the area in a while, why not hop on I-76 and see what this “Purple” city has started to create?

Before I share a few road-trip-worthy stops, I think it is only fair to share a very abridged history of how Barberton became Barberton, aka the “Magic City”.

History

When O.C. Barber moved his Diamond Match Company to the area in 1894, it brought with it the industrial age, creating jobs, giving the area the nickname “Magic City.” The wealthy businessman and founder of Barberton was also involved in other industrial ventures. He built his mansion and Anna Dean Farm in the city. During its height, O.C. Barber would open the grounds of the farm on Sundays during warmer weather, and visitors from even out of state would make the drive to walk the property. There is not a lot that remains of the farm. The mansion, once a rival counterpart to Stan Hywet, could not be saved from the wrecking ball and was subsequently torn down due to lack of funding. The Barberton Historical Society was able to save the Colt Barn and some of the other structures. For additional information about area history, the farm and yearly tours, visit the society’s website. Make sure you visit the local library downtown, across from Lake Anna, to view the beautiful stained-glass windows that were saved from the historic 52-room estate.

Lake Anna

Located in the heart of the city is a 10-acre lake called Lake Anna, named after O.C. Barber’s daughter. It is unique in that it is an original glacial kettle lake (a depression formed from retreating glaciers). You can park alongside the lake and enjoy a stroll around it. During spring you can view the blossoms, and in the fall the community celebrates a Mum Festival.

SHOPPING.

Below you will find a few of the shops that I found that offer a unique shopping experience.

A Paper Crafting Store | My Ohio Fun

A PAPER CRAFTING STORE
📍161 2nd St. NW

If you are into card making, scrapbooking, or wanting to learn something new, this is your store. Rows and rows of cutting dies, napkins, embellishments, paper, and more await you. It is truly a paper crafting store. They are more than happy to show you how to use any of their merchandise. The day of my visit, they were demonstrating how to use napkins for backgrounds on cards.

Al's Quality Meats

AL’S QUALITY MARKET & AL’S CORNER RESTAURANT
📍155 2nd St, NW, Barberton
alsmeatsandeats.com

Make sure you pack the cooler! The smell when you enter Al’s is amazing. They have been a Barberton staple for so long that the aroma of smoked sausage seems to have permeated the walls, enticing you to the deli counter to order your butcher selections. They also sell the cabbage rolls served in the Corner Restaurant next door, which is open for lunch during the week. Pro tip: If you purchase their smoked sausage, grab a jar of horseradish.

Treasure hunters are sure to find something among the delightful collection of antiques and collectibles. Many of the pieces I saw were unlike anything I have seen elsewhere, including a lobster pot, a “Lucy” teapot, and a mechanical horse. I found the most adorable pair of ducks that I simply had to save. When you are inside, make sure you look up at the store’s interior architecture. Unclaimed Freight | My Ohio Fun

FABRIC & FREIGHT MART

If you love all things fabric, lace, sewing notions, and maybe even a kitchen sink, a stop at Fabric & Freight Mart is a must. I found a cute owl fabric and buttons I never knew I needed. Allow time to browse. There is stuff everywhere. When checking out, I had a pleasant surprise: my purchase was put in an original Polsky Department Store bag. That alone was worth the visit! (Polsky’s was an Akron Department store that has since closed.)

White Rabbit Galleries | My Ohio Fun

WHITE RABBIT GALLERIES
📍571 W. Tuscarawas Ave.
whiterabbitgalleries.org

If for no other reason, you should plan a trip to Barberton just to take one of the art experiences that are offered at White Rabbit Galleries. I cannot tell you how enjoyable it was to take an art lesson there. The gallery offers various art classes for a very nominal fee. I registered for a pottery class. The last time I even touched clay was probably in a high school art class, so I really wasn’t sure what to expect. What I can tell you is that everyone is welcome, regardless of skill level. My pottery instructor was Ron White. He has years of teaching experience behind him and is very, very patient. He takes time to explain the various steps and is there with a helping hand if needed. Not only is Ron a great instructor, he is also a phenomenal sculptor and artist.  Even if you don’t take a class make sure you visit his studio area, well worth the trip.

The Gallery

It is free to visit the current exhibit(s) and shop the Gallery store. White Rabbit Galleries is a nonprofit community arts center. The gallery is a family affair. Laura, Jim, and Molly have put their heart and sweat into creating this wonderful art space. Make sure you pop-in and view their current exhibit and shop the amazing artisan pieces available in their shop.

“White Rabbit Galleries began in 2021 through the partnership of Laura Smith and Molly Brown, two artists looking to provide better opportunities for local artisans to create, sell, and educate the community and surrounding areas.”

About my “Pinch Pot” class:
To make my mug, I attended two classes.  (2026 price: $25 each class, plus a few extra bucks for supplies.) In the first class, I shaped the mug so it could be fired. In my second class I painted it for its next firing. I did not plan on using mine as a mug to drink from, so I did not need any additional firing. After the final firing, I was able to swing by and pick up my masterpiece.
Not all classes require return visits. Check their website for upcoming selections.

MAGICAL THEATRE COMPANY
📍565 W. Tuscarawas Ave., Barberton
magicaltheatre.org

My first experience with Magical Theatre Company was when my children were small and I had heard about this wonderful theatre geared toward children’s productions. Wanting to broaden their horizons, I bought tickets to a show. At first, I was not sure what to expect, but my children loved it. The costumes and the movement of characters throughout the play kept them entertained.

Originally built in 1919, the theatre was first a movie house named “The Park.”

The theatre is a professional venue for families and young audiences. Its season runs from late fall through early spring, and productions are posted on its website. The theatre also offers summer drama camps. Check their website for details.

FOODIE STOPS

Barberton Chicken

FAMOUS BARBERTON CHICKEN

For many, when someone says Barberton, people think the “Fried Chicken Capital”. Unlike traditional fried chicken, “Barberton’s Serbian style chicken” has its own unique flavor. Each piece of chicken is dipped in flour, eggs, and breadcrumbs before being deep-fried. The traditional chicken platter is served with coleslaw, hot sauce (a unique rice, tomato and spice combo), heaping fries, and a side of wheat or white bread.  Today, you will find the taste of Barberton chicken at places like Belgrade Gardens, DeVore’s Hopocan Gardens, and White House Chicken. I have listed their information below. For years each restaurant boasts they have the best. You can decide which is your favorite. (I know which one is mine.)
