I TOOK A BEE INSPIRED ROAD TRIP. 🐝

What began as a simple road trip to a bee farm just outside Spencer, Ohio, turned into a full day of bee-inspired adventures.

ROAD TRIP

My road trip started when I landed in the western edge of Medina County.

Spencer Ohio Mural - My Ohio Fun

Located west of the City of Medina, the Village of Spencer has one traffic light and a beautiful mural depicting actual photos of a time gone by. My photograph above does not do it justice. The mural is not small and covers the entire side of the old Spencer Tire building. Artist John Donnelly.

Aunt B's Spencer OH | My Ohio Fun

📍 107 E Main St, Spencer, OH 44275 | Facebook

I am always on the hunt for a new diner. Give me a small town, bar stools—and it’s my kind of place—and Aunt B’s, located at the town’s intersection, fits the bill. Keeping with my “Bee” themed day, I enjoyed one of their chicken sandwiches with “hot honey.” Tasty! There menu includes all the diner  items you would expect. During the week breakfast ends at 11am. They are closed on Mondays and most days at 2pm. The day of my visit Aunt B was not there.

I am sure if I looked hard enough I would have found something with bees among the Beatles and Coke memorabilia, and other unique collectibles. Anyone looking for an Ouija Board? No thank you!  If in town, be sure to stop by. The pink flamingos will show you the way.

Queen Right Colonies | My Ohio Fun

Queen Right Colonies is not just for beekeeper enthusiasts. The shop sells fresh honey, bee merchandise and supplies, cosmetics, beeswax, and more.  Also located on the premises is Das Amish House. Step back in time. Filled with antiques and vintage items. A beautiful collection of artifacts.

Queen Right Colonies hosts school field trips and group tours.

If you find yourself visiting the bees, please let Sheila or Jill know that My Ohio Fun says hi!

Chatham General Store | My Ohio Fun

đŸ”čChatham General Store

📍 6403 Avon Lake Rd, Medina, OH 44256 | chatham-general-store.

You’ll want to stop at this general store, which was built in 1854. In 2020, the current owners, Bill and Beverly Scandlon, rescued it from auction and lovingly restored its old-time general store charm. Like many historic stores, it offers essential cooking staples, along with a deli, cold drinks, and ice cream. There’s even a section for camping gear. In the small gift shop area, you’ll find Beverly’s beautiful watercolor prints of bees, as well as flowers, landscapes, animals, and birds. Her note cards cost less than one from the store.

Honey Bee Bakery Medina, OH

đŸ”čHoney Bee Bakery

📍23 Public Square, Medina, OH | honeybeebakerymedina.com

A small little bakery located right on the Square in Medina. There are tables so you can enjoy one of their Bee cookies or other delightful treat and a cup of coffee.  (Gluten free and vegan also available.) Hours are T-W 8am-2pm | TH-SAT 8am-4pm and Sun 9am-1PM. Closed Monday.

Root Candles - My Ohio Fun

đŸ”čRoot Candles

📍623 W. Liberty St., Medina, OH 44256 | rootcandles.com

It would not be a visit to Medina without a stop at Root Candles.

In 1869, Amos Ives Root revolutionized beekeeping. Creating inventions that would allow the mass production of honey and even wrote a Bee Keeping encyclopedia. In 1920, the next generation of Roots started using beeswax for candle making. For over 150 years this Medina company has been passionate about bees, beekeeping, and beeswax.  Their store is filled with all types of candles and home dĂ©cor’. The smell is amazing. Pro tip. Buy their unscented tea lights to use when hosting a diner party. That way there will be no scent near food. I use them in my tea pot warmers.

Medina Little Free Library | My Ohio Fun

đŸ”čProject: Learn of Medina Little Free Library (Charter #57313)

Look for the Library Box Beehive. So cute.
📍 406 S. Broadway Street, Medina, OH

Little Free Libraries premise is you “Take a Book, Leave a Book”. Being a fellow Little Free Library owner,  I like to leave a few of my favorite books, along with a note from my Library to theirs. .

“Built by Medina Eagle Scout Corbin Cerney. Project: LEARN is a nonprofit adult literacy organization. The library is located on the Champion Creek multipurpose trail near Spokes Cafe, a coffee and snack shop.”

Country Maid IceCream - My Ohio Fun

đŸ”čCountry Maid Ice Cream

📍 3252 W Streetsboro Rd, Richfield, OH 44286 | countrymaidicecream.com
(Approx. 20 miles north of Medina Square on I-271.)

For over 75+ years, Country Maid has been making their ice cream using natural ingredients. It’s also the place where you will find honey infused ice cream. They use locally sourced honey to make this lightly sweet ice cream. There are picnic tables outside. The Orchard shop on the grounds is open seasonally. Make sure you stop by during apple season.

Sometimes the best road trips are the ones you don’t really plan. They just happen.
Keep on exploring!
