Ohio Foothills – Road Trip Itinerary #1
Ready to hop in the car and enjoy a road trip? This Ohio Foothills day trip rolls through the small village of Baltic and Sugarcreek, with memorable stops that include a one-of-a-kind train museum, a winery in a historic mill, and the World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock. Plus, other unique stops. Buckle up—below is my itinerary for Ohio Foothills Adventure #1.

Destination: Baltic, OH.
Established in 1848, the Village of Baltic straddles three Ohio counties; Coshocton, Holmes, and Tuscarawas. It is a short drive from Berlin and Sugarcreek, Ohio.
Baltic Coffee Roasters

What a pleasant surprise to find in the small village of Baltic. This coffee store welcomes you with the rich aroma of freshly ground coffee. Go ahead and enjoy a complimentary cup while you browse the many coffee options. This family owned business originally started in their garage! I could not leave without purchasing three of their best sellers to grind at home. They also sell their coffees in single-serve pods. Tip: Pick up extra bags for housewarming or holiday gifts.
My coffee selection included: Baltic Mornings, Columbian and 1902 Brew. I have enjoyed them all and would definitely purchase again.
Leaf and Linen Retail Shop

A charming store. Walk inside and you will find a nice selection of oils, candles, home furnishings, and clothes tailored around everyone. From beautiful cotton dresses to jeans, to adorable knit tops and more. So many cute items. Owners, Marilyn and Jana, source their clothing locally and from manufacturers they believe in. Make sure you check their discount rack in the back.
Lunch at East Main Kitchen

If you want to enjoy a delicious home-style meal, this is your spot. I asked the staff what was their most requested dish. Without hesitation, everyone agreed the slow-cooked roast beef. So, I ordered the small portion option which came with 2 sides. It was outstanding and I can see why it has such a fan club. I would not say my portion was small. I had plenty left for leftovers. If you want to try something different, their menu options include, sandwiches, salads, soups, steaks to shrimp and grits and more. (Their menu is on their website.)
Don’t forget to stop by the bakery counter. Cakes, cookies, baklava and scones! All baked in-house. Breakfast is served until 10:30 am. The East Main Kitchen is great place to stop and enjoy a meal before heading on to your next destination.
Baltic Mill Winery

It is not every day that you find a winery located in a historic three story timber framed old flour mill turned winery. Owners, Dan and Judy Garver purchased the flour mill in 2013. Grapes are brought in from various grape regions and the wine is made on-site in the cellar. To this day you can still see some of the original milling machinery around the winery, as well as pictures of the original mill. Enjoy a wine flight inside or on one of their patios.

Baltic Country Meats

Butcher shop and store. I unfortunately did not allow time in my itinerary to stop, but according to the locals, it’s a great place to purchase various meats.
Find a restored 1819 pioneer log cabin on State Route 93, at the north end of the village. The Baltic Area Historical Society maintains the cabin and surrounding grounds.

Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum

You don’t have to be a railroad enthusiast or a history buff to enjoy a tour of the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum. What began as one man’s dream has become a place dedicated to preserving these beautiful pieces of golden-era railroad history for future generations. Each locomotive on the tour has its own backstory. Restoring and maintaining these marvelous engines takes a team and a true labor of love. Thanks to Jerry Joe Jacobson’s passion and dedication, visitors today can stand beside the pieces of history that helped shape America.
The museum is home to 20 steam locomotives, railroad cars, and diesel engines. Outside you will see a working railroad turntable that moves the trains from one location to another. A gift shop and restrooms are located in the depot.
Throughout the year, the museum hosts special events, which include a train ride. Visit their website for upcoming events.
Tour notes: There is walking and standing as you tour each of the locomotives and the outside turntable. Restrooms are not available in the Roundhouse. There is also no air conditioning. The roundhouse does offer plenty of open windows and doors to bring in the outside.
Cabin Creek Golf

Two 18-hole miniature golf courses, batting cages, and a driving range make this stop perfect if you are looking to add a little outdoor recreation to your road trip.
World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock

Located in the heart of Sugarcreek you will find the World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock. It is 23 feet tall and 24 feet wide and every ½ hr. a cuckoo pops out and a band emerges from inside the clock playing Swiss polka music, while a couple dances. It is a true roadside attraction – Ohio bucket list item.

Alpine Hills Museum

If you want to learn more about the history of Sugarcreek and why Sugarcreek is known as the Little Switzerland of Ohio, head over to the Alpine Hills Museum. Exhibits include an 1890’s cheesehouse and Amish kitchen, artifacts, Swiss and Amish cultural information and more.

Across the street from the clock is a delightful fabric shop filled with a wide selection of fabrics, notions, premade quilts, and even toys. If you are into sewing or a fabric hoarder like me it is a must stop.

If you find yourself visiting Sugarcreek on a Friday or Saturday, take a peek inside this corner shop. Their “Blind Date” Books, “Movie Night” bags, and surprise “T-shirt” bags make for a great gift.
The Loose Caboose Depot

What a delightful way to finish the day. This charming ice cream shop just a few blocks around the corner from the clock offers a cute patio and an adorable caboose. Their menu includes gourmet hotdogs, burgers, fries, sundaes, Velvet scooped ice cream, and more.
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
🔹I landed in Baltic around 9:30 am. I visited all of the highlighted stops and started returning to my basecamp around 6pm. This is a great day trip or add it to your itinerary while visiting Ohio’s Amish Country.
🔹Pack a cooler.
🔹 Credit cards were accepted at all the stops. But I always suggest you also bring cash.
🔹 Watch for buggies, bikes and walkers when traveling through Amish Country. Be careful when climbing a hill if you can’t see what is on the other side.
