ENJOY OHIO’S MAPLE SEASON AND EVENTS

Each year in February the Ohio maple industry begins the process of tapping area maple trees for their sap. Tapping a tree consists of drilling a small hole in the trunk of a sugar maple and inserting a spout. Then attaching a bucket or plastic tubing to the spout where the sap is collected.

The weather plays a big part in the type of maple harvest there will be. Cold freezing nights and warm sunny days help the sap in the trees to thaw. As sap pressure builds up in the tree the sap finds its way out. By tapping the tree, the sap has an outlet. The sap is then boiled to remove the excess water. It takes approximately 40 to 50 gallons of sap to produce one gallon of syrup. Depending on the weather, the maple sugaring season lasts from mid-February through the first part of April.

This March why not experience Ohio’s maple season. Spend a day watching the smoke rise from the sugar houses, sample various products made from maple sugar, and eat pancakes smothered in 100% PURE OHIO MAPLE golden goodness.

Below is just a sampling of some of the maple syrup events happening in Ohio.

#MyOhioFun road trip:

Burton, Ohio is Geauga County’s oldest and first official settlement.  Located on the square is the Burton Log Cabin Sugar Camp.  Here they make and sell some of the best pure Ohio maple syrup.

“In 1931, during the throes of the Great Depression a group of dedicated members of the Burton Chamber of Commerce had an idea to combat the difficult economic times.  The idea was to construct a log cabin in the park in Burton for the purposes of making and selling maple syrup.”  – excerpt from Burton Chamber of Commerce.

Another one of my favorite stops in Burton is Quintealia’s Tea Parlor.     Read more here.

For an extra “Maple” treat, stop by Maggies Donut Shop in Middlefield, Ohio and try one of their Maple Bacon donuts. Address:  15963 E. High Street, Middlefield, OH  44062
