FAMILY KEEPSAKES

There is just something about being wrapped up in a quilt, that reminds me of my grandmother.   When I was young, I never really appreciated her quilts, as much as I do now.  I knew they took long hours to make, and I enjoyed seeing bits of leftover fabric from outfits she made me included in the quilts.  But I never really appreciated them as pieces of art.

My grandfather was also involved in the making of the quilts.  He was in charge of creating the quilting templates out of cardboard that would be used to create the sewing patterns on the top of the quilts.  He also made the quilt racks that would be used to create the various quilt sizes.

Just a few of Adena’s quilts.

Throughout my early teens, I would sit at my grandmother’s old black singer sewing machine and help her sew blocks together.  When maxi-skirts were all the rage, she helped me make a skirt all out of quilt blocks.  Unfortunately, at the time I had no interest in sitting at the quilt rack and learning how to hand stitch all the quilt layers together to make a quilt.

In high school, I received a sewing machine for Christmas.  Like all small town girls, you were taught how to use a sewing machine in Home Economics class.  I have used that sewing machine throughout my adulthood for various projects.  Mending and small crafts.  And yes, I even attempted a quilt. Still not finished 20 years later.  It is on my to do list.

I am proud to admit that I am a  fabric hoarder. I blame my grandmother for that.  I can’t leave a quilt shop or fabric store without adding to my growing fabric stash.  Waiting for that one day when I will open up the box and create a quilt as warm and as beautiful as one of my grandmother’s quilts.

So in honor of my grandmother, I have created this page to share upcoming Ohio quilting shows, events and local fabric stores. She would have loved the Ohio Quilt Trails.
