CLARY GARDENS

Summer is the perfect time to visit Clary Gardens in Coshocton, Ohio. The garden’s mission is to develop and maintain a public botanical garden that provides access to horticultural education, environmental stewardship, local history and the arts. Visitors are encouraged to hike and explore. The “Upper Paths” feature natural and artificial walking surfaces such as grass and limestone. The “Lower Paths,” and those surrounding the new event space are paved, allowing better access for those with limited mobility or strollers. Assistance for persons using wheelchairs or walkers is recommended, as are comfortable shoes to explore all areas.

Clary Gardens features include the new Vivarium, or butterfly enclosure, rose garden, gazebo and sandstone amphitheater, where outdoor and interactive theatrical events are held each summer. The mile-long Woodland Trail showcases the area’s sandstone outcroppings & streams, which is a perfect mild-to-moderate terrain hike. Recent additions include a Children’s Garden and Storybook Trail, as well as a 40’ by 60’ event pavilion surrounded by paved paths, waterfall, pond, fireplace, and grand staircase. Themed gardens include a Pollinator Garden, Japanese Garden, and White Garden, allowing guests to be transported to new exotic locations without leaving Coshocton.

Featured within the gardens are a pair of 1800s-era homes and a stone courtyard with working springhouse. Two ponds on the northside of the property help feed the annual and perennial displays through a gravity-fed cistern system. Special educational events and programs are held year-round.
